10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Made Out Of Spite
8. First Date - Blink-182
Part of the game that comes with the pop music industry is all about keeping up the momentum. You're only as good as the last song that you released, so you have to make sure that whatever you do after that measures up to what you had already written in the past. And when Blink got a talking to from their label, they got pretty salty on Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.
As the band went into record their follow up to Enema of the State, they wanted the whole project to be a little bit heavier than the beach party punk than they had been used to recording. When they handed the finished product into the label though, they were shellshocked to find that the higher ups sent the record back, thinking that it didn't have a good lead single to sell the record.
Being more frustrated than anything else, both Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge went home that night and decided that they were going to write some of the dumbest pop rock songs that they knew how, almost not even caring about what the songs were about. While Mark's attempt with the Rock Show gave them one of their biggest hits, First Date has become the real stand out track from this era of the band, with Tom dialing up the nursery rhyme elements of their sound and lyrics that sound like they should be ripped right out of a cheesy teen comedy. It might not have been the strongest songwriting by any stretch, but it did manage to get the job done regardless.
