10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Written About Drugs

7. Sweet Leaf - Black Sabbath

When metal was first starting to become a power player in the early '70s, Black Sabbath were often treated as outcasts in the world of hard rock. Led Zeppelin may have been the more sophisticated approach to the blues back in the day, but Sabbath were the kind of neaderthals that put together songs that tried to conjure up the devil whenever they played them. Not every song was about demons though, and you can tell what Sweet Leaf is about from the first few seconds that you hear it.

Starting with Tony Iommi busting a lung, this entire track is a love song to marijuana, which the band were just getting into around this time. Even though Sabbath haven't really strayed out of their traditional wheelhouse in terms of songwriting, there's almost a certain haze coming off of the song as well, with the guitars sounding a little bit fuzzy and just creating a certain relaxed feel that makes you feel like you're right in the room getting some second hand smoke off of them.

While Sabbath may have just wanted to write a song about pot, this album would become the blueprint for the sound of stoner rock just a few years down the line, with bands like Sleep and Monster Magnet almost taking their entire sound from this song alone. There's a good chance that Sabbath have songs dedicated to Satan somewhere in their catalog, but this song may as well be a gift from Jah than any of Lucifer's work.
