10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Written For Someone Else
4. Girlfriend - Paul McCartney
After Wings first started to hit it big, some fans were starting to think that Paul was starting to lose the plot of his band again. While albums like Venus and Mars and Band on the Run had been massive hits, the entire ethos behind London Town was a bit poppy than most were ready for, almost verging on yacht rock territory since the album itself was recorded on a yacht. Paul hadn't forgotten his way behind a hook though, and Girlfriend almost shows him in disco territory.
And that's because this was not meant to be a Wings song by any stretch. When Wings were finishing up the sessions for London Town, Macca had started a friendship with Michael Jackson and wrote this entire song with Jacko in mind, down to the fact that almost the entire is sung in falsetto. Jackson did end up taking a liking to the song though, eventually using it as a deep cut track from Off the Wall.
As much as Paul has become a giant in the world of songwriting though, this was never going to be able to go toe to toe with the likes of Rock With You or She's Out of My Life as the big single from the record. If anything, this feels like Paul trying out some new sounds with Michael in mind and accidentally writing a Bee Gees song instead. Then again, the sounds of a Bee Gees song in the late '70s is rarely ever a bad thing.
