1. Lana Del Rey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvuzHSFhmn4 Cool isn't about being popular or accepted by everyone, it's having that undefinable sense of vision and style which sets an artist apart from the crowd. All of the women here undoubtedly possess that in spades, but none of them have had to survive such a critical kicking from large sections the press and public alike and shrugged it off so nonchalantly, whilst also managing to write the best songs of the moment that are both passive and aggressive, often at the same time. This is why Lana Del Rey is without doubt the coolest woman in music today. She has kept walking the path she's created for herself with steadfast resolution, finishing the first stage of her career with the admirably out-there short film 'Tropico' which dwelt on the truly epic themes of the rise and fall and redemption, not to mention a whistle-stop tour of modern American pop culture en route. Who else would have had the guts to make such a film and pull it off? Here is an artist not afraid to tackle massive themes in the supposedly disposable world that is popular music, and who does so better than anyone else. And she keeps getting better, her recent forays into film soundtracks on 'The Great Gatsby' and most recently the theme tune to 'Maleficent' has seen a continued refinement of her noirish sound, increasingly sounding more like a Tim Burton soundtrack scored by Danny Elfman. Like all great artists Lana Del Rey creates her own universe, but it is one that is neither elitist nor mainstream, rather a wonderfully idiosyncratic place that anyone can visit. Her upcoming sophomore release, 'Ultraviolence' promises to be her darkest work yet - which will take some doing - and hopefully it will silence the doubters once and for all, because here is someone who really deserves your attention and awe.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
