This is one of those songs that people probably don't recognize as a Bruce Springsteen song due to the fact that Manfred Mann's Earth Band recorded what is primarily known as the definitive version of it. When you play these two songs back to back it's almost hard to believe that they are the same song. Manfred Mann's Earth Band takes this song and completely makes it their own. Obviously the two different artists who recorded this song had completely different visions for how the song should sound. Bruce's version is great in it's own right with his signature voice and always excellent horn section but the keyboards and organs used throughout Manfred Mann's version can only be described in one word and that word is iconic. As soon as Manfred Mann's version comes on you know exactly what you are listening to. If someone had never heard Bruce's version they might not even know what they were listening to until they get to the chorus. Springsteen may have written the song but Manfred Mann is credited with making it the well known hit it is today and with good reason. The performance by Manfred Mann's Earth Band is captivating from start to finish where as Bruce's version is just another Springsteen song.
