10 Cover Songs That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Did)
6. Under Pressure - Foo Fighters
Covering Under Pressure just feels like something that should not happen in the regular world. Since the original is already perfect in every single way, there's no real reason to have someone come along to do their own version of it. Though Freddie Mercury has the charisma and unbridled joy in every word he sings, the Foo Fighters just bring it to another level entirely.
Granted, it's not like Dave Grohl doesn't have the chops to pull something like this off, considering his proficiency in nearly every instrument he touches. Even so, this version of Under Pressure gives us a little bit of a different bent to the narrative, as Taylor Hawkins breaks his silence behind the drum throne to take lead vocals on David Bowie's part. While Grohl doesn't have nearly the vocal chops to rival Mercury's, his delivery just makes everything feel like a big party whenever it comes on.
For everything that the original Under Pressure does right, this is equivalent of taking the original version and giving it steroids, with every single instrument operating at full capacity from start to finish. Even with Taylor Hawkins having the cover band Chevy Metal operating during the Foos' off seasons, it's safe to say that the Foos proper haven't lost their will to take a kickass tune and see where it goes.
