10 Cover Songs That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Did)
5. No Quarter - Tool
In the pantheon of amazing metal musicians, it's a crime that we don't get new Tool music as much as we could. Despite being around for the better part of three decades, you can still count on one hand the amount of albums of original material that these rockers have at their disposal. Then again, even when they want to reach into someone else's territory, it's going to be the biggest head trip you can possibly imagine.
As much as Led Zeppelin have been a mainstay of the hard rock genre, it almost feels wrong to see a band like Tool making something out of Whole Lotta Love or Rock and Roll. If you had to pick one song though, No Quarter pretty much fits the bill, considering the original sounding like an epic unto itself in the '70s.
Taken from the box set of some of their live cuts, this rendition of the Zeppelin classic is so distinct that it's almost sounds like Maynard rewrote this song from the ground up, keeping the same rhythmic accents while adding in the trademark Tool vibe. Keep in mind this was the days of Aenima, which showed Tool just coming into their own as one of the greatest in their field. Not better by any stretch, but a damn solid outing nonetheless.
