10 Cover Songs That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Did)

4. Ass*ole - Tom Petty

Ever since the start of his career, Tom Petty has always been willing to pay tribute to the greats who have come before him. Whether it's performing covers of the Byrds songs or jamming on some old rockabilly from the garage days, Petty was always a rocker that was as much of a fan of others' music as he was his own. So when you give him a soundtrack to cover whatever he wants, the first person he decides to cover is...Beck?

That's not to say Beck isn't an amazing talent in his own right, but the pairing itself doesn't really scan properly in your brain. Hell, even the idea of covering a Beck song in and of itself seems weird, considering his eccentric nature from one song to the next. There is one common link in country though, and Petty milked it for all it was worth on Ass*ole.

Each of them being huge descendants of country legends like Johnny Cash, Petty recognizes the pure melancholy in this tune and manages to make it sound even more downtrodden, almost matching the same lackadaisical delivery that Mr. Hansen was already so good at doing in his own right. Not necessarily the happiest of songs...just one for those rainy days when the pain becomes a little too much to bear.
