10 Cover Versions No One Saw Coming

2. Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sY-TsLXiDo OK, so this isn't technically a cover but this song is just bonkers enough that we decided to include it on the list anyway. Gwen Stefani's debut album Love Angel Music Baby included a song called Rich Girl, a re-imagining of the song If I Were A Rich Man from the musical Fiddler On The Roof. Clearly, Gwen thought she was onto a winner with this "take a showtune and turn it into a pop song" formula, as she and producer Pharrell Williams tried it again with Wind It Up, the lead single from her second album The Sweet Escape. Wind It Up is set against a remix of The Lonely Goatherd from The Sound of Music. It's a totally mental re-working of the song that is frenetic, unpredictable and leaves you wondering exactly what it was you just spent 3 minutes and 11 seconds listening to. And then you realise: a mix of Gwen Stefani rapping and Gwen Stefani yodelling a song that was first made famous by Julie Andrews.
