10 Craziest Musical Urban Legends
6. Van Halen's Chocolate Mandate
By the time most rock acts reach the top, a certain level of diva starts to set in. No matter how humble your beginnings might be, you can afford to have some more outlandish expectations for a gig when you're playing to thousands of people night after night. Then again, having specifics when it comes to sweets might be kind of stretching it.
When going out on tour in the early '80s, Van Halen's stage setup was already complicated enough, from David Lee Roth swinging a sword around to Eddie Van Halen's various effects pedals that needed to be triggered every night. Once you got to the dressing room requirements though, fans and fellow musicians were stunned that VH insisted to have M+M's in the room, but with all of the brown ones removed. However, there was actually a bit of method to the madness.
As Roth put it later, most of the band's staging was already complicated, which could lead to dangerous situations if not set up properly. Therefore, if the guys walked into the room and saw an M+M's bag with no brown ones, they would know that the show was going to go off without a hitch. For the less diligent type though, these hair metal giants were also known to trash the room if they found any stray brown M+M's. You might call it a bit snobbish, but it's at least nice to know that VH always had their crew in mind when setting up a concert rider.
