10 Craziest Musical Urban Legends
2. Kiss' Bloody Comic Books
From the first time they strapped on instruments, KISS always wanted to put together a band that was larger than anything that came before them. Donning horrific makeup and singing amazing tunes about the excesses of rock and roll, these masked giants became almost superheroes to an entire generation of music fans. However, every superhero has to have their origin story, and KISS' story may have been a bit too close for comfort.
In association with Marvel, KISS was the first band to have a comic book made about them, with their superpowers reflecting their onstage personas, with Gene Simmons as the Demon and Ace Frehley as the Spaceman. When it came time to go to print though, the shock rockers were alleged to have put their actual blood into the ink that went into the comic book pressing. While this could have easily been done just to stir up controversy, it's actually 100% true.
During some downtime in between touring and recording, each respective member of KISS had blood work done before eventually going to the printing plant to mix their blood into the red ink that would be found in the comic book. Then again, seeing how this is the same band with a bass player that breathes fire and sprays blood from his mouth every time he takes to the stage, to do anything less might not keep with their image.
