10 Craziest Onstage Incidents In Rock
3. James Hetfield's Fiery Inferno
By the time the '90s rolled around, Metallica had really started to come into their own. Though they were always the kings of the thrash metal scene in the '80s, the arrival of the Black Album in '91 sent them into the stratosphere, with metal songs that actually found their way onto the radio. Just when they really started to hit their stride on a tour with Guns N Roses though, things went up in flames during a show in Montreal.
As the band started to build up the first slow moment of the night with Fade to Black, James Hetfield started to play the part only to get confused about which microphone to use. Not minding his surroundings, Hetfield didn't realize he was standing over a canister that would shoot up flames until it was too late, with half of his body completely scorched from the blast. After rushing him to a hospital, Hetfield had sustained third degree burns on half of his body, putting him out of commission with guitar duties for some of the tour.
Not wanting to let his fans down, Hetfield emerged just a few weeks after treatment in a bandaged arm, with John Marshall playing the rhythm guitar parts instead. Regardless of how much Metallica are labelled as sell outs for this record, it takes a special kind of performer to put his audience before himself like this.
