10 Criminally Underrated Classic Rock Songs You Need To Hear

6. Sad About Us - The Who

.For as much as the Who's My Generation set the rock world on fire, many have had a sour taste from the band's followup A Quick One. Aside from the epic title track that concludes the record, the band tend to view this as just a stop gap in between some of their more artistically expansive pieces.

The entire album is a bit underrated by the group, but "Sad About Us" not becoming a classic Who song is the highest musical offense of the band's career. Pete Townshend may not have written much for this record, but this song is one of the best he had ever put out in the 60's. Seeing how it was written just before their rock opera period, this song showed just how well Townshend had mastered the pop song formula.

The way that the lyrics of a breakup are brought across are so yearning that it transcends the typical Mod scene the band were playing to at the time. This track also showed the very beginnings of what would later be called power pop, with many bands like The Jam and Green Day singing the songs praises for many years. Even if it has gotten a bit of attention in later life, "Sad About Us" deserves a much better shelf life that just "that one poppy Who track."
