10 Criminally Underrated Classic Rock Songs You Need To Hear
5. Thank You - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin's sophomore effort was a real wake-up call for the entire hard rock scene. While many rock magazines tend to showcase Led Zeppelin IV as the band's best, this caustic assault on the senses is most likely the band's masterpiece. Whereas most of the record is dominated by the heavier cuts like "Whole Lotta Love" and "Moby Dick," the soft ballad "Thank You" showed just how good Zeppelin were at showcasing love songs.
After howling his way through most of the previous tracks, this singing style is a different look for Robert Plant, as he croons his way through this simple ballad. People expecting a furious Jimmy Page guitar are out of luck on this one, with most of the song being led by John Paul Jones' gorgeous organ wash. That doesn't mean our favorite riff crafter is left out to dry, with the middle showing his talents to solo on an acoustic guitar.
Over time, people have continued to return to Led Zeppelin II for the undeniable riffs, but those folks who skip the album's more plaintive moments are selling themselves short in a big way. While it's a stretch to call any song from this album underrated, "Thank You" deserves to be brought up more as one of the band's definitive tracks.
