10 Criminally Underrated Classic Rock Songs You Need To Hear
4. Kings And Queens - Aerosmith
Many of the members of Aerosmith tend to dislike revisiting the album Draw the Line. Recorded in an abandoned penitentiary, everyone involved cites this album as the time when the band started overindulging themselves with drugs, which led to the production sessions stalling drastically.
While you can hear some of that frustration across the album, "Kings and Queens" is actually one of the most exquisite cuts that the band ever made. The opening riff gears you up for something epic before the verses bring you into a heavy waltz, with Steven Tyler telling a harrowing tale of vikings bringing chaos to every town they come across. The interlude after the second chorus also features some of Tom Hamilton's most infectious basslines, as he reaches for incredibly high notes before Tyler's shriek brings everything crashing down.
It's an interesting case study with this song; it's much too heavy to be called a ballad but not nearly fast enough to be considered a rocker. It's a real anomaly to describe what this song does, but it's almost something that needs to be heard in order to be believed. It's a long way from something like "Dream On," but this is Aerosmith giving you something that you didn't even realize you needed.
