Released: 1979 Arguably the biggest hit for American rock band Blondie. It has gained itself a reputation as one of the most prolific rock songs from recent years, with countless uses in movies and several covers. This desirable nature of the song was achieved through an instantly recognisable yet inoffensive guitar piece, which led to popularity with radio stations, alongside a strong vocal performance from Debbie Harry, which none of the covers have even come close to matching. However behind this radio friendly guise of non aggressive punk is a much darker aspect to the song. Whilst the title sounds like an optimistic view of Harry's towards getting what she wants out of life, the true meaning of this statement is remarkably more sinister. The song is in fact about an ex boyfriend of hers who stalked her after they broke up. This is directly referenced through the repetition of "I'm gonna getcha" which refers to the song's protagonist's obsession with Harry, and exemplified through " I'll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall, where I can see it all, find out who ya call" giving further details of his daily pursuit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VFuHj9_Tgw
