7. Quadrophenia - The Who
When it comes to the Who, most people like to single out their rock opera Tommy as one of their greatest contributions to the rock genre. It's not that hard to see why either, with the story of a deaf, dumb, and blind boy setting the template for how a true rock opera would be structured for years to come. However, is everyone just going to forget the other massive rock opera in their catalog?
Across Quadrophenia, you can tell that these Mod rockers really started to grow into their rock and roll boots, with Pete Townshend flexing his muscles as a seasoned songwriter. Though each member contributes in some capacity, this is really Townshend's brain child, switching to the piano to create some of the best soundscapes the '70s ever produced on songs like the title track and Love Reign O'er Me, the latter of which shows off Roger Daltrey's greatest ever vocal performance.
That's not to say that the Who hadn't forgotten where they came from either, with songs like the Real Me being a great slab of amazing hard rock with horns and even Keith Moon getting to show his comical side on the track Bell Boy. Even though Tommy may have gotten here first, by no means should you skimp out on the Who's second grand epic. Especially when the tunes are still this damn good.
