10 Darkest Albums In Rock Music History

6. In Utero -Nirvana

Out of all of the albums on here, this is probably the most high profile release you're going to find. Hell, there are a majority of Nirvana fans who will tell you that In Utero doesn't necessarily have anything to do with anything spooky or anything. This thing has been out in the world for over 2 decades now though, and context matters when looking back at this.

Wanting to break away from the polished sound of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain set out to make the most abrasive record he could muster, which often devolves into random noisy tracks like Milk It or Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. When Kurt was eventually found dead in his Seattle home after this record was released though, a lot of these lyrics end up sticking out a lot more in retrospect.

While Kurt was never the most coherent lyricist from one song to the next, some of the individual lines on here hit a lot different after he left us, painting the picture of a man who's gotten everything he ever wanted and finding out he doesn't need any of it. Especially when looking at the primal screams of Scentless Apprentice and the warped demeanor he has in the Heart Shaped Box video, this wasn't just any old Nirvana album. You can tell that this was a man that was desperately crying out for help.
