10 Darkest Albums In Rock Music History
5. White Pony - Deftones
Anything that's even remotely connected to the world of nu metal is going to have a tinge of darkness to it. Even when you had the more radio friendly side of things like Linkin Park, you still had songs like Breaking the Habit where it became a lot more introspective than you were willing to hear. When a lot of the angry white boy set were making forced sounding anger, White Pony is where anger gives way to open hostility.
Is it really fair to call this an openly nu metal release though? Outside of the harsh assaults of something like Elite, there are moments on here that fit into the realm of shoegaze and trance like music as well. Whatever genre you want to call it though, Chino Moreno's vocals are some of the most vicious he has ever written, making up stories and dialogue to paint some of the most grim pictures imaginable, from killing your girlfriend in the song Digital Bath to having an underground blade fixation on Knife Party.
Don't worry if that's unsettling, because the rest of the album is about the sunshine-y topic of....drug use and addiction taking over your entire body. Once Frank Delgado's mixing kicks in, you're practically swimming in a haze that you can't get out of. This might still be a classic of the nu metal genre, but you can't be held liable for the scars that Deftones leave on your psyche.
