10 Darkest Albums In Rock Music History
4. Iowa - Slipknot
For most artists, the scariest thing that you could ever face is trying to outdo yourself. Instead of the typical monsters that you see in horror movies, what chills you to your core is trying your best to come up with a second hit to outdo yourself. While all signs might point to watering down your sound, Slipknot hunkered down and put themselves through the ringer with Iowa.
Even though these guys have literally made albums in haunted houses, this album still takes the cake for the ultimate darkness they have reached. From one song to the next, you'd swear that Corey Taylor was about to tear you to shreds through the speakers, as he shreds his throat apart on songs like Disasterpiece and the Heretic Anthem. You don't get that way from just chilling out in the studio though, and these guys went medieval on themselves.
Since day one, the producer would never let them settle for anything less than grimy, famously dropkicking a new guitar out of Jim Root's hands and the title track's final vocal take being laid down with Corey Taylor stripping naked in the middle of the vocal booth and ending with him cutting himself up with anything he could get his hands on. I don't think you could come up with a more messed up way of making an album if you tried.
