10 Darkest Hard Rock Songs Of All Time
6. Polly - Nirvana
It's not shocking that Kurt Cobain had more than a few songs that dealt with some dark topics. Throughout most of Nirvana's career, you can hear different parts of Kurt's personality that seemed cynical, dark, and sarcastic all at the exact same time. The real time you should be scared though is when they decide to turn things down a notch.
On the surface, Polly is probably the most gentle song on Nevermind, being nothing but Kurt playing guitar and virtually no drums outside of a few cymbal hits. That's because a song like this doesn't need drums to be intense, with the entire song being sung from the perspective of a sexual predator who has taken the titular woman captive. Taken from a real story that Kurt had read about, what makes this song so dark is just how unemotional it is. As heinous as this seems, it very well might be just another Tuesday for this guy.
Outside of the pitch black subject matter though, this song had somewhat of a silver lining, with the girl eventually catching him with his guard down and getting away. Even though grunge became music for the masses, this was much more than just your standard jock jam. This is for people on the fringes of society and trying desperately to hold onto their sanity.
