10 Darkest Hard Rock Songs Of All Time

7. Sleep - My Chemical Romance

Making an album as ambitious as The Black Parade wasn't going to be an easy feat. Aside from trying to outdo their idols like Queen at their own game, the band's stay at a haunted studio in California gave way to a few paranormal activities, including Gerard Way having crippling nightmares every night. While that kind of stuff should trigger alarm bells, it takes the real professionals to turn it into a song.

Though not every part of Sleep has to do with the titular Patient in the narrative of the album, it works just as well for his limited lifespan. After going through all these tests and being told that he has only a few weeks to live, this is the moment where he's given up hope and decides to embrace the dark side of life and sleep.

Since this comes right after songs like Mama and House of Wolves, our protagonist has pretty much resigned himself to the fact that he's going to Hell, and has turned himself into an absolute killer in the afterlife. By the time you get to the end of the track, the sheer volume of the song consumes you to the point where you can barely hear him screaming "WAKE UP" in the background. At this point though, any chance of him redeeming himself might be a lost cause.
