10 Darkest Rock Albums Of The 90s

9. Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson

If you were looking at the charts in the late '90s, we were clearly going for a different mood than the early days of grunge. Since everything started to get a little too morbid at the time, Stone Temple Pilots were out of the conversation and were quickly getting replaced by the radio friendly bands like Green Day and Third Eye Blind. Just between the cracks though, we had a demon bubbling beneath the surface who was about to dominate the charts.

In the grand tradition of many rock operas that came before, Antichrist Superstar was Marilyn Manson staking his claim as one of the most sinister figures of the time, and he sure delivers on every track on here. From the minute Irresponsible Hate Anthem comes on, Mr. Warner is looking to become one of the most hated figures in America, detailing his journey from a worm to the antichrist laying siege upon the Earth.

As the years go by though, Manson never really was able to deliver on that promise again, with most of his later output sacrificing most of his greatest hooks in favor of songs that were trying to get a rise out of you instead of actually being catchy. For one glorious hour though, there was no hope for salvation when the Antichrist started his eternal reign.
