1. Life On Mars? (1971)

Filled with an almost cryptic mysticism, a breathtaking mix of piano and strings and - yes - that vocal performance, the second single from Hunky Dory is pretty much damn near perfect.

The song's popularity has endured for obvious reasons, and it often stands near the summit of critical assessments of Bowie's work. It also lent its name to the hit British television show of the same name following a time-displaced policeman in the seventies - a follow-up, Ashes to Ashes, borrowed another Bowie banger for its title.
