10 David Bowie Songs That Will Make Your Life Better

For those absolute beginners to those jean genies, here's a selection of the Thin White Duke's best.

David Bowie, Golden Years
RCA

Four years on from his unexpected passing, there's still not many artists who can hold the attention like David Bowie. Call him Ziggy Stardust, call him The Thin White Duke, call him an absolute master - he's all of the above and many more.

Over half-a-century, the man born David Jones helped change the face of modern music as known, with his influence and style still felt widely across the medium to this very day, in the fabric of so many chart heavyweights and up-and-coming artists.

To celebrate, we've picked out ten of our favourite Bowie cuts to further commemorate his artistry, stretching from his early days with Mick Ronson, through his spectacular mid-era pomp and all the way to his final records recorded in the twilight of his career, still among the best he's put to vinyl.

Given the sheer depth and breadth of his catalogue, there's hundreds - quite literally - that could have made the selection here, but there's little denying that they all stand as testament to just how much of a genius the man was when it came to crafting a tune.

Without further fanfare then, here's those David Bowie songs that will kick you up off the sofa to dance - or leave you to ruminate in his intoxicating brilliance.

10. Queen Bitch (1971)

Having moved away from the hard-edged sound that dominated much of The Man Who Sold the World throughout Hunky Dory, it's an electric blast to hear Mick Ronson drudge up a grungy energy that permeates through this album cut.

It's gone on to become well-regarded even though the closest it got to a single release was as the B-side of Rebel Rebel some years later, with its particularly snarling riff and compact energy helping it serve as an effective penultimate hit on the record's run of art-pop highs.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
