10 Decent Albums With Way Too Much Filler

8. Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains

Any semblance of a grunge band making it past 1994 felt like a pipedream once Kurt Cobain passed away. While not outright killing the genre completely, the rest of the bands of the Big 4 were also in the middle of their spirals, with Pearl Jam duking it out with Ticketmaster around the same time. When you look at Alice in Chains though, it's hard to see their last album as anything but half finished.

Across its runtime, there's a lot of stuff on here that would have made for really good songs had Layne Staley been in better shape. Ever since the Jar of Flies EP, Staley had pretty much started to lose his battle with heroin addiction, leaving nothing but a brooding croak for most of his songs. Even the idea of making songs on this album felt like torture, with Jerry Cantrell even talking about the gestation period taking forever just to crank the thing out.

Hell, there's even a song on here called Nothin Song, which is all about being bored in the studio and having to come up with something to make sure that the label doesn't get on their backs about anything. Music business jokes aside, this was the last tell tale sign that Alice in Chains were about to implode, break up, or both at the exact same time.
