10 Disappointing Albums By Legendary Bands
5. Sonic Highways - Foo Fighters
Everyone in the rock community these days seems to be at least rooting for the Foo Fighters to do well in some capacity. Since Dave Grohl is one of the only musicians in the rock scene that actually gets legitimate screen time in the big leagues, hearing him branch outside of his comfort zone with the Foos should have been fantastic news, taking to the road to make an entire record in one classic music city after another. That makes for a neat idea on paper, but it also means that the record is going to be completely scattered whenever you listen to it.
Though most of the songs on Sonic Highways are fairly solid Foo Fighters jams, most of them seem to work as singular musical experiences rather than being taken in as a whole. If the accompanying documentary had taught us anything, it would be that every one of these cities tends to have their own unique identity, and hearing those bleed through in the music is a bit disorienting, going from the homegrown feel of a song like Congregation written in Nashville to the bombastic style of I Am the River from their time spent in New York.
While this definitely isn't Foo Fighters by numbers or anything like that, this feels less like a record and more like songs that were just thrown together to create something that looks like an album. The band is still in it for all the right reasons on here, but this was the first Foo Fighters record that seems to be just a little bit bloated even with a tight album runtime.
