10 Disappointing Albums By Legendary Bands
2. Never Let Me Down - David Bowie
Throughout every era of David Bowie's career, you always knew you would never be getting the same thing twice. Bowie always played characters in his music, and his chameleon nature made for records that blended different genres together, from glam rock to soul to the kraut rock sounds of his Berlin period. We had reached a new guard during the '80s though, and Bowie may have gone a bit too far playing the pop star on Never Let Me Down.
Recorded in what Bowie would describe as his "Phil Collins years," a lot of the songs on here feel more generic coming out of Bowie, mining the same kind of dance-centric pop music that he was riding on after Let's Dance. While the songs off of his previous record like Tonight didn't really have the Bowie charm to them, Never Let Me Down was the first record where Bowie's zany nature seemed to work against him, as the production of this album goes for something abrasive and just ends up sounding like someone was playing with the levels in the studio, especially with the snare sound across the record.
Bowie may have been more than happy to follow the trends every now and again, but this wasn't the sound of a legend blending into a new genre. This was the sound of David fumbling around in the dark to see if something would stick, and what we got is more of a mess than some kind of abstract art.
