10 Disturbing Songs You Hear Then Never Forget
10. Donnie Darko - Let's Eat Grandma
Let's Eat Grandma's second LP is a shade darker than the experimental pop act's first, and centrepiece Donnie Darko stands as the best song ever named after an early 2000s cult movie classic. Not that I'm sure there's much competition.
The first half of the track is little more than a simplistic, elegant rise, built over a thumping synth beat and spacey strings. It's moody, but there's nothing particularly disturbing. However at the mid-point the song breaks out into a genuinely surreal explosion of lyrics and sound, with the ferocity of the song hitting a new level.
A dreamscape is built, as the vocals spit out lines like "I've got bed bug bites up my spine" and the singer talks about peeling her skin like a clementine. Combined with the increasing urgency of the music, it's like being trapped inside someone else's dissociated breakdown.
On the surface, Donnie Darko is an atmospheric pop song, but it manages to get under your skin through the repetition of its heartbeat-like pulse, surreal lyrics and hugely emotional climax.
