10 Easy Guitar Riffs (That Don't Appear On Other Lists)

6. I Can't Explain - The Who

One of The Who's earliest hit singles, "I Can't Explain" firmly cemented the group as leading figures in the 60's British music scene, leading the British Invasion alongside The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Beatles and many other bands. This Kinks' inspired track was one of the first songs that Pete Townshend wrote for the band, and his songwriting talent is as prevalent here as it is in the band's later hits of the 60's and 70's. The song is still so beloved by the fans that it has remained on The Who's touring set list 56 years after it's original release.

The three power chord riff that opens the song is played throughout the majority of it's short two minute runtime. The bridge section is just as easy, consisting of another short riff made up of a few more chords, but once these have both been learnt, that all it essentially takes to start playing along to this song in full. The brief solo sections are played with the A Minor Pentatonic scale, so for a bonus exercise, you could try and improvise some short passages using this easy to learn scale. Short, but still effectively catchy, "I Can't Explain" is a fantastic song to start with when looking to expand your repertoire.
