10 Elvis Presley Songs Which Will Change How You Think About The King
5. A Hundred Years From Now
One of the joys of recent years for Presley fans has been the re-issuing, re-mastering and re-packaging of much of his discography. While not every Elvis collection is essential (and some, arguably, are decidedly not) 2021's From Elvis In Nashville boxset does a sterling job of gathering together material taken from two famed sessions dating to 1970.
For these recordings, the singer put together a crack band of Nashville’s best session players. Over marathon day/night sessions, Presley and the assembled team let loose in a manner he had not been able to for a long time. Elvis, freed from music publishing restrictions, chose all of the songs, displaying his eclectic taste, his talent for spotting a great tune and unique ability to wrest the most out of the song, the band and himself.
The From Elvis In Nashville set, crucially, provides the results as they were heard in-studio, free from orchestral overdubs which were added later. The rousing A Hundred Years From Now first appeared on the album Elvis Country, and for a long time could only be experienced in that setting – split into pieces which faded in and out, forming a sort of motif for the album as a whole. As you can hear below, the original recording is a glorious piece of studio semi-improvisation.
