10 Emotional Rock Songs That Will Make You Cry

9. Nutshell - Alice in Chains

You can't help but listen to an album like Dirt by Alice in Chains and not feel a little... well... dirty. While not necessarily talking about the darkest of subject matters, hearing everyone in the band grapple with their addictions with the music behind them makes you feel like you're walking through mud as you listen to every track. There comes a point when you need a break from action, and when Alice decided to go acoustic, that's were they really went for the heart.

Out of all the songs on Jar of Flies, Nutshell is probably the most barebones, only having a handful of chords and looping everything throughout the whole song. The main draw of the song though is Layne Staley, as he takes the basic structure of the song and turns it inside out, being more candid than ever before about his heroin addiction. As much as he struggled on the last record, this is the kind of attitude that is heartbreaking to watch play out in song.

Going further and further into the song, you can practically hear Staley give up on his battle with his demons, almost knowing that he isn't going to win any time soon. With Staley dying of a drug overdose a few years after the record came out, you can't help but feel like this is a lost ghost speaking to you from the other side of consciousness.
