10 Emotional Rock Songs That Will Make You Cry
7. Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
You really need to do some digging in the pop punk community to find something that will really tear at your heartstrings. As much as you may have related to something like Good Charlotte or Simple Plan back in the day, it gets a lot tougher to relate to something like I'm Just a Kid when you reach your mid 20's. When Green Day reached for the stars on American Idiot though, it was time for Billie Joe Armstrong to reopen an old wound.
Along with the political themes on the rest of the record, Billie poured a lot of himself into the characters on here, with Wake Me Up When September Ends almost sticking out like a sore thumb in the track listing. Rather than tying it into the story of the record, this is a tribute to Billie's father, who passed away when he was a young boy in the month of September. All of the bratty angst is gone here, with Billie just sounding like that same little kid from back in the day, all grown up but with that same pain that never really goes away.
And the actual sting of this song hasn't dwindled either, with Billie sometimes finding it hard to vocalize the years since his dad's passing when he sings the song live. While you might be able to become a stronger person by living through it, you're still going to have that scar for the rest of your life.
