10 Essential Rock Albums Of The 2010s
1. Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
This is possibly one of the most harrowing musical journeys that you will ever find yourself going down, but it is worth every moment. You Won't Get What You Want is one of those albums that will leave you in stunned silence for a good while after the final track ebbs away and it will stay with you long after as well.
This album continues the major departure of their previous album, only doubled down. Full of fuzzy, overdriven bass of an octave so low that it's almost felt rather than heard. Clipped, distorted snares crack over the top of everything beneath them. Haunting keys chime and echo as vocalist Alexis Marshall doesn't so much sing but provides a shouted recitation of ominously poetic lyrics.
It's the fact that this album is so vague that makes it special. You Won't Get What You Want isn't specifically about addiction or mental illness or abuse, though it could easily be about any one of those things depending on your own interpretation - and, more importantly, your own experiences. This album is about trauma, full stop. It takes you along, or drags you along rather, as someone descends to rock bottom. You Won't Get What You Want is itself something of a traumatic experience, but also a strangely cathartic one. And not one you'll ever forget.
