10 Even More Perfect 1970s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

6. Van Halen - Van Halen

99% of rock bands on the planet would sell their own grandmother to be able to open their debut album with a song like Runnin' with the Devil.

With this self-titled 1978 debut, Van Halen brought a record that was fun, energetic and full of the sort of harmonies that would become synonymous with certain hair metal bands who would follow in the band's footsteps. At a time when the great rock acts of years prior were drowning in overindulgence and self-importance, when punk was starting to go more intense and hardcore, and disco was on its way to dying a disturbing death, Van Halen took the ball and ran with it.

There was hype before this '78 album - largely down to David Lee Roth's classic rock star good looks - and VH certainly delivered. Roth's vocals knocked it out of the park, and the record nicely rocketed along thanks to the longest track - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - clocking in at just 3:47.

The iconic Van Halen sound is best showcased here on I'm the One, with the driving force of the song pushing listeners along at breakneck speed - all while Eddie Van Halen obviously does Eddie Van Halen things, instantly marking himself out to the world as a generational talent.
