10 Even More Perfect 1970s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
2. Destroyer - Kiss
While Van Halen's debut album had a phenomenal opening with Runnin' with the Devil, Kiss' Destroyer record likewise has one of the all-time great album openers with the legendary Detroit Rock City.
Upon hearing that track, the stage is set, the table has been laid, and the four famed face-painted rockers are ready to blow you away with likely the finest album of their storied career.
Released in 1976, Destroyer arrived at the sweet spot between Kiss' arrival on the scene and the period when they decided to dabble in solo ventures, disco tracks and eventually their 'unmasking'.
For Detroit Rock City, the bubbling bassline of Gene Simmons is legendary, as is the duelling guitars of Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley. On the guitar front, there's nothing quite as much fun as the piercing opening to Shout It Out Loud. Then there's the thunderous stomping beat of the grandiose God of Thunder.
Showing that it's not all about larger-than-life personas and explosive performances, though, Destroyer also features one of the the great rock 'n' roll ballads of its time with Beth. Sure, it's basically a song about choosing to be a rock star rather than give up some time for your lady, but it's still a beautifully delicate track for a band as famously over-the-top as Kiss.
