10 Even More Perfect 1980s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
7. Queen - The Game
Was The Game Queen's greatest album? Not quite, but it was arguably their last great studio album.
By the time of The Game's release in 1980, the band had been formally together for ten years and had already put out seven full records. The problem for some, though, was that Queen had started to put more of a focus on commercial, catchy rock anthems rather than simply producing great songs. With The Game, the band moved away from that, returning a little to their roots whilst also adding a dollop of experimental electronica to proceedings.
The Game felt like classic Queen but also like fresh Queen, with the energy and fun of Crazy Little Thing Called Love epitomising this new approach from the band. Then again, album opener Play the Game perfectly sets the stall out for tracks like Crazy Little Thing Called Love and the iconic Another One Bites the Dust.
It's not all progressive, forward-thinking effects, electronics and synthesised harmonies, mind, for The Game also delivers one of the great Queen ballads with the initially minimalistic, then totally operatic Save Me to close out this record.
