10 Failed Songs That Became Cult Classics
6. Stray Heart - Green Day
After years of reshaping the rock landscape, Green Day seemed burnt out by the beginning of the 2010's. With two rock operas and a bonafied '90s classic under their belt, the band weren't really sure where to go from their original pop punk formula. Where to go from there? Some of the most middle-of-the-road music of your entire career.
For much of the band's trilogy of albums Uno, Dos, and Tre, fans were not pleased with their favorite pop punk band getting neutered with by-the-numbers tracks at best and offensive experiments at worst. On the other hand, "Stray Heart" from Dos is actually one of the few songs that fans can still lose their minds over. Complete with a swing feel and a danceable bass line from Mike Dirnt, this song feels like the band just cutting loose in the studio, as they seem to be rediscovering their love for playing music again.
As opposed to the more noisy cuts throughout the rest of the record, this song is just a feel-good tune that knows its strengths and rides its rhythm to its fullest potential. Many fans have Frankenstein-ed the trilogy into a playlist of their favorite tunes, but "Stray Heart" has always found its way into fans' hearts one way or another.
