10 Failed Songs That Became Cult Classics
7. Frantic - Metallica
It doesn't really take a rocket scientist to figure out that St. Anger is bottom-of-the-barrel for Metallica. After years of tumultuous times and nearly breaking up during the making of the record, the resulting hour of music is one of the most ear-grading experiences the band has put out, with a snare that will find its way into your nightmares if you're not careful. No one can really dispute the inherent "wrongness" of this record, but if you actually give it the time of day, it opens up pretty promising.
Starting off with a heavy-as-hell guitar riff, "Frantic" is Metallica at their most unhinged, as James Hetfield paints a picture of him being at the mercy of his addictions. Granted, this song is the first introduction of Lars' relentless snare bashing, but the riff that drives the song has more catchiness in a couple of seconds than the rest of the album could muster.
At the outset, St. Anger's mission statement was to get back to the essence of the garage sound of Metallica, and this song is probably the closest the band had come to actually capturing that inhibition. St. Anger might be D tier for Metallica, but "Frantic" has been held up by fans as one of Metallica's most overlooked bangers.
