10 Failed Songs That Became Cult Classics
4. El Scorcho - Weezer
Weezer's Pinkerton is known as one of the greatest alternative albums to come out of the '90s. After setting the world on fire with their debut, Rivers Cuomo's emotions came out in full force on this album, with "El Scorcho" being the weirdest single they have ever released. There's a lot of endearing qualities to this track, but the public at large was not having any of it.
Since Weezer's previous outing was a joyous piece of nerd rock, the anxiety-ridden protagonist behind this song ended up coming off creepy to a lot of fans. Instead of the towering rock god that Cuomo was meant to become, he's still the insecure nerd who would rather write songs about his shyness than actually talk to girls. Also, the fact that these guys were writing depressive tunes right after the allure of grunge faded away made them look like they were chasing the trends of yester-year.
This song (and album) were looked at as a stain on '90s rock, but over time the open-hearted lyrical sentiments behind this track has ended up clicking with a lot of different bands. It took its sweet time attaining classic status, but "El Scorcho" went from being another casualty of a passe band to one of the most essential songs of the entire decade.
