10 Failed Songs That Became Cult Classics
3. Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones
All lines of punk rock can normally be traced back to the Ramones. After years of getting bogged down in prog rock odysseys and the more glamorous forms of hard rock, these four guys from New York took rock back to the streets, with a sound that was as hard-edged as it was infectious. It's a shame that they never really got to see their songs work their way up the charts though...
Over time, "Blitzkrieg Bop" has become the band's unofficial anthem, with its "hey-ho" chorus being the soundtrack to many a kid's film in its day. However, back in 1976 when the album was released, the mainstream couldn't be asked to cover something as juvenile as this. Rather than attain the heights of a band like Led Zeppelin, the Ramones spent most of their golden period in punk rock squats, where they would thrash away for anyone who would have them.
Even as their music reached the mainstream market, the band were never able to truly capitalize on the sound they helped pioneer. Though they went on for anyone who would have them, even the headliners on some of the bands' bills felt embarrassed having a band they idolized opening up a show for them. "Blitzkrieg Bop" may have never gotten its day in the sun on the charts, but given the amount of careers its launched, it's not going to be forgotten any time soon.
