10 Famous Albums That Left The Best Song On The Cutting Room Floor

9. Counting Crows - August & Everything After

Cut Song: "August and Everything After"

The Counting Crows' debut album contains a number of great, well-known songs -- "Mr. Jones", "Round Here", "Rain King" -- but none of them compare to the affecting plaintiveness of this would-be title track.

Not every album is capable of holding onto a 9-minute epic, which seems to be the case with Counting Crows' maddeningly essential "August and Everything After", a track so dense and grand that it was lopped off the album that shares its namesake.

Unlike those previously mentioned tracks, this one doesn't enunciate The Crows' more obvious influences like Van Morrison and The Band. It's a singular piece of music that stings with the kind of brutal honesty lead singer Adam Durwitz made a career out of, without ever succumbing to the bitterness that cling to the edges of his more famous songs.

"August and Everything After" ultimately found a way to be included on the album in some capacity, as the handwritten scrawl that adorns the cover of the album is actually a snippet of its lyrics.
