Coloring Book is one of the most uplifting rap albums of the 21st century. Essentially a gospel album with better beats and smoother rhymes, this album was rightfully viewed as one of the best to come out of 2016. But it could have been even better if it weren't for a pesky case of copyright infringement.

"Grown Ass Kid" samples a small vocal run from Roberta Flack's "If Only For One Night" to great effect. It acts as the backbone for Chance's colorful, panoramic stories about maturing into a good Christian man, and all the pitfalls that come with trying to force yourself into that growth.

The track is basically a thesis for the rest of the album, which makes it so very disappointing that Chance wasn't able to get clearance to use the Roberta Flack sample. The song was cut at the last minute because he couldn't get the necessary permissions in time.

Coloring Book is at once harsh and beautiful, and songs like "Summer Friends" and "Same Drugs" are the rare kinds of introspective grooves that still keep your head bobbing, but there was no better torchbearer for this album than the one that was left off the final track list.
