When it comes to retooling and reworking albums, there's generally some sort of creative realisation that takes place within the band, prompting them to put out different material. In the case of Deftones 2010 record Diamond Eyes this is still the case, but it's a decision prompted by much more tragic circumstances.

In 2008, while working on an album titled Eros, the band's bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a traffic accident which left him in a comatose state. This resulted in the band's song-writing going in a vastly different direction. Despite the fact that many would expect the band to have wanted to write songs channelling their pain, anger and frustration at the tragedy, they actually wanted to write more optimistic music, perhaps as a way of dealing with the situation.

This lead to the writing of new songs and reworking of some material, resulting in new album titled Diamond Eyes in collaboration with friend of the band Sergio Vega as bassist. What Eros might have sounded like is something still discussed by fans to this day.
