10 Famous Albums You Didn't Know Were Almost Completely Different
4. Grimes – Art Angels
If you aren't sure who Grimes is, don't worry – you will know soon. Grimes is a Canadian singer songwriter who is on the cusp of super-stardom, having released four studio albums since the beginning of her career in 2009. 2015's Art Angels is easily the singer's most successful album, selling well and being met with immense critical acclaim. Art Angels has spawned singles Flesh Without Blood, Scream and Kill V. Maim so far.
Despite the album achieving huge praise from critics and managing accessibility whilst still retaining Grimes' patented experimental qualities, the record went through a serious change. The follow-up to 2012's Visions was chucked out by Grimes before release, the singer simply stating that it “sucked”.
The lengthier reason for Art Angels predecessor being scrapped is that Grimes felt that the songs were too similar to those found on Visions, and didn't represent any sort of musical change. The tracks were also much gloomier than the lighter songs found on Art Angels. This is interesting because many fans of the musician feel Art Angels is the moment when Grimes sacrificed her uniqueness for accessibility, so there are doubtless many who would have preferred a release more derivative of Visions.
