10 Famous Bands With Rotating Lineups
4. Gorillaz
After the '90s came to an end, most of the biggest names in the world of Britpop tended to fall by the wayside. Giants like Oasis had already started to backslide a little bit after the success of Be Here Now, and all we had left was the more lightweight acts like Coldplay to try and carry rock and roll into the future. The Britpop golden age may have come to an end, but what Damon Albarn had cooking up seemed to go beyond rock and roll altogether.
While living with cartoonist JAmie Hewlett, the idea started to form for a completely electronic band, taking the same rock and roll hangups and putting them in a more zany soundscape. Damon would take on the role of the titular 2D, but every other instrument in the Gorillaz canon was something new, with new artists coming in and out of the studio on each album, from The Clash appearing on Plastic Beach to hooking up with Noel Gallagher on the album Humanz.
The biggest switch up with Gorillaz is how well they work in the world of hip hop, with some of their greatest tracks featuring guest contributions from everyone from MF Doom to De La Soul to Snoop Dogg. You can say that it's all just the fictional band evolving along the way, but it goes a lot deeper than that in reality. Damon was a man who knew that his rock star days were behind him, and now was the time to take on something that could mean more than just a fad.
