10 Famous Bands With Rotating Lineups
2. Nine Inch Nails
Given the man's pedigree, Trent Reznor didn't really need a band moniker to get Nine Inch Nails off the ground. Before he had even put together a collaborative project, he had already shopped demos around to record labels of just him playing all of the instruments in the studio, with almost every one of them offering him a deal in some capacity. It can get lonely as a solo outfit though, and Trent was always just as good as the people he was working with at the time.
From the start at Pretty Hate Machine, the inclusion of Richard Patrick brought something that was a lot more aggro than what we had seen in the industrial scene, with songs that went into a lot more psychotic directions. Once Trent was left to his own devices in the Tate house for records like the Downward Spiral though, using the guitar voice of Robert Fripp brought a certain haze to the record that was more suited to ambient music than something loud and abrasive.
Although he may have still been the pinup industrial superstar, Trent was always looking to expand his vision and make something that would hit you in the face, bringing in people like Josh Freese to lay down drums on Survivalism before finding a partner in crime with Atticus Ross, who has practically become the co captain of the group in recent years. Now with film scoring under his belt, the warped mind of Trent almost seems to use his fellow musicians like instruments by themselves, always trying to push them that one step further to get what he wants.
