The producer of Lauper's debut album, Rick Chertoff, got hold of the rough demo by Hazard and passed it on to Lauper, who simply reworked the lyrics of the original to fit a female perspective. The result was hailed as a feminist anthem, and topped the charts in nine countries. Despite not being a household name, Robert Hazard had an extensive career in music, and released a major label album in 1984. It is said that he rarely, if ever, played his own version of 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' live.
