10 Famous Songs Whose Meaning The Fans (And The Pundits) Got Wrong

7. Higher - Creed

As with U2, Creed is a band well known for the Christian beliefs of some of its members, and Creed especially, while not identifying itself as a Christian band, features songs that are unambiguously spiritual.

‘Higher’ would seem to fit the mold. Take a glimpse at the chorus and the reference to Heaven is inescapable:

Can you take me higher?

To a place where blind men see

Can you take me higher?

To the place with golden streets

But according to Scott Stapp, lead vocal, the song is actually about the power of lucid dreaming. He explained that, “You’re physically asleep, but you’re awake in your mind.” Having read a book about Hindu monks who had perfected the technique, Stapp thought it could be used to escape from a recurring nightmare he was suffering from. “Higher” was the result of that experience, and after he wrote the song he never suffered from the nightmare again.

Look at the concluding lines of the song and you can clearly see his intention:

Up high I feel like I’m alive for the very first time

Up high I’m strong enough to take these dreams

And make them mine
