10 Fantastic Rock Albums That Never Got Made

7. Toy - David Bowie

An artist of David Bowie's caliber often has more than a few things going at once. I mean, if you've managed to actually create characters around some of the music that you play, you're probably looking at the big picture more often than just the gory details behind your work. Then again, sometimes that causes your more celebrated stuff to go overlooked from time to time.

Looking to meld the old with the new, the initial idea for Toy was supposed to be Bowie making a new album of music all while incorporating some ideas that he had laying around since his work in the '60s. Operating somewhere after the album Hours, things started to take a turn when production halted midway through the record. Combined with the added sense of dread that came after the events of 9/11, Bowie decided to put Toy on hold as he worked on the album Heathen, after which he quickly folded the project.

While the eventual demos of some of the Toy odds and ends were released onto the Internet in 2011, chances are we probably won't be hearing any more after Bowie left things on glowing terms on Blackstar. Then again, considering the raw material we have to work with, maybe the time is right for someone to actually come in and properly mix these tracks into a coherent album.
